6.5×55 HUNTER or 260 rem ctr
Posted by vixty on February 4, 2016 at 12:33 amLooking to get a 6.5 but cant decide if I want one that I could set up to hunt long-range with as well as shoot long range or just get the ole heavy CTR and use it for paper punching.
I'm leaning more towards the 6.5×55 but I don't want to be disappointed with accuracy. I understand the barrel will heat up faster but that's beside the point.
Id like to hear your experiences.
thanks

If you are wanting a 6.5×55 and want a heavy barrel, look at the Sporter model, you may or may not like the stock, you can always sale the stock and get one you like, I did that with my 260 because i wanted one with a 24″ barrel, I sold the stock for $500 and got a B&C m40 stock. I have no experience with 6.5×55.

Since all T3 actions are long, there is not much advantage to choosing the 260 based on that criteria. Performance wise, both come with 1:8 twists, the 6.5×55 has a bit more case capacity and the throat is quite long. I am not sure if Tikka uses a different bolt face for the 6.5×55 (technically it's slightly larger than the .308 based 260) so if rechambering is in your future, you might want to confirm dimensions (some guys on accurate shooter consider the difference negligible).
I chose the 6.5×55 in the 24 ” Sporter because I wanted the barrel length and like the stock. I have a Hunter in 30-06 and the wood stock also fits me well. Im not real up to speed on the CTR but I think it offers a higher capacity factory magazine and is threaded for brake/suppressor.
There is a good YouTube by a guy in Canada that did a lot of mixing and matching of stocks between models and it's worth a look.
I think it's going to be hard to go wrong with your choice! -

Thanks for the input. Is the 6.5×55 a long action? One thing I like about the 260 is I can set it up as a long action and get a long action mag which allows me to load to the lands. if the 6.5×55 is already a long action then I my not be able to load to the lands and have the rounds fit the magazine.

excellent point Vixty, I have not done any load development on my 6.5×55 yet, but have 500 140 gr Berger Hybrids and Lapua brass calling to me to get busy! And Yes, the 6.5×55 is long action and my comment about the throat is based on other's reports. One caution, I don't know what longer magazines are available for the CTR.

I would be dropping the CTR in my XLR chassis which allows the use of the aics mag which allows for loading long.

I wonder if the 6.5×55 mag is the same length as the 30-06 mag?

Jason at Mountain tactical can better answer this than I can. I have a standing order for an extended 30-06 mag in anticipation of its development.

Is there a way to get a 300 win mag magazine to work?
