6.5×55 @ 1000yds
Posted by bitsiboo on February 21, 2016 at 9:24 pmHi everyone. I've got a Tikka Varmint 6.5×55. Using 42 gr Vit N140 and a 139 SMK HBT. Beautifully accurate at 200-600 but just can't get any consistency at 1000yds :- sometimes it's not even hitting the target board. anyone got some good recipes or bullet heads that will reach out to this distance?

Hi one thing you need to check is when the bullet goes through the transonic state into subsonic as this totally screws up the flight path

Wind/mirage are also important factors beyond 800 yards. Check out tiborasaurus rexs sniper 101 on youtube he covers everything from a-z in long range shooting. Ive learnt a ton but unfortunately im still looking for good groups at 100 yards!

139gr Matchking ? Do they make one
If you mean 140 SMK then N560 is a slower powder and better than N140 in the 6.5×55. start load is 45.2 and max 48.3 in the Vhit load book. check what bullet you have first though. start low and pressure test. -
What velocity are you seeing with your load?

The trouble with ' N ' powders is there inconsistent from one batch to another, at lease that's what we've found here in England

I shoot Berger 140 VLD Hunting out of my 6.5×47 and my 260 Remington and they both are 1/2MOA out to 1000. Have you tried the Bergers? I could not get the SMK's to shoot well out past 500 yards.

There's no reason that round should be going transonic before 1000, unless your MV is like 2300fps or slower. What twist rate is the barrel? Might just not like the SMK.

I agree with Dimwit…we need to know the velocity of the load to see what it should be doing…
I can also tell you that shooting 500-600yrds is a chip shoot compared to 1000-yrds, so many factors come into play after 500yrds… that could account for the OP's success at 1000. If you gun isn't hitting consistent groups under MOA at 500, don't expect to hit a MOA or larger sized targets at 1000, with wind, etc…

Thanks guys for all your input. I've only just picked these posts up as I thought this website alerted my email! Realising there is a lot of homework involved in long range shooting.
Thanks
