6.5 Creedmoor to 300 WM conversion
Posted by cadmonkey on June 21, 2015 at 8:26 pmI would like to buy a rifle in .308 (which I have reloading gear for already), shoot until I can rebarrel into 6.5 creedmoor on a MDT chassis, learn to shoot the 1000 at the range (lower cost and recoil than the 300WM, and then switch to 300WM for long range hunting.
I am asking a lot I know….
I understand that all T3 actions are long and that the bolt stop can be changed out to convert between long and short. My question is:
Can you convert between short (6.5 ceedmoor) and magnum (300 WM) and my second question is, are the actions all the same or are some stainless steel (to help know what T3 to originally purchase)?

Different bolt face diameters will prevent you switching back and forth. You will also find that the T3 in .300 Win Mag is severly constrained for OAL if you want to fit loaded rounds in the mag. If you single feed ammo that will not fit in the mag, you will have problems ejecting rounds as the bolt will not pull far enough back without modifying the bolt stop. I have one and I am getting a DBM to fix the problem of too short mags. I was aware of this problem and bought the rifle cheap for the action to use for a custom build.

Thanks J. I can buy/modify the bolt stop from long to short and it will be in a chassis that takes box mags – I am just hoping that the Magnum was not another type of action altogether (or if the Magnums just use the long bolt stop as well).
Does anyone know if the magnums are the same action as the long and short?

Same action. The bolt stop on the .300 is a short one to allow a longer throw, but rounds loaded beyond factory mag length are still too long. It may be possible to shorten the bolt stop to allow a longer throw, but I think I read somewhere that the latest ones are hollow, which may prevent you from doing that. An alternative may be to have a small v milled from the front of the ejection port (like many custom actions) to allow an unfired round to be extracted. As a guide, an AI .300 Win Mag mag will give an OAL of 3.6″. Yukonal on here has loads of experience and may be able to offer more advice.

Thanks again J. I found from other research that the Tikka 300 Win Mag magazine is a lot shorter than others (AI for example) and cannot feed the 300 WM at the OAL that many long rangers load to mate with the lands sooner for accuracy. I think I was trying to make the square peg fit a round hole.

Yup – I can't fit 178 -Max in the mag when loaded to 10 thou off the lands, so the even longer VLDs will be worse. CDI DBM with AI mags may be a solution, but I am still trying to establish whether they allow the full 3.6″ from the AI mags. Another alternative I am looking at is to go .300 WSM instead. They fit in the .338 Lapua AI mags, where OAL will not be an issue. I would just drop down to 7mm Rem Mag, but I already have one, and I want to be able to launch 208 A-Max and 210 VLDs.
