270 or 308?
Posted by jrsdws on March 29, 2016 at 8:27 pmOr something else for deer hunting Wisconsin. I'll be traveling out of state to Wisconsin in the fall to deer hunt. We'll be in the timber mostly and most shots will be close….100yds or less. The occasional shot across a field of a couple hundred yards wouldn't be out of the ordinary, but most shots will be in the woods. I'm considering using my muzzleloader, but heck…it's a reason to buy a new gun too!!
At this point in time, I have no plans on hunting other species with it elsewhere but one never knows.
I've read some of the online debating of 270 vs 308 and it seems there are equal arguments for either. My host buddy shoots either or and likes them fairly equally.
I'll probably purchase either the T3 Lite or the T3 Hunter. The big question is pros and cons of both. It appears cartridge selection and price are not much of a factor between the two.
Any opinions much appreciated.

Have you thought about a 260…?
I own a 308 and my buddy owns a 270…both great guns but if I was buying a new rifle tomorrow for all around shooting any Deer related hunting I would be buying a 260, way less recoil, great ballistics, and most are super accurate…the ammo is harder to find but the 260 does everything better in my opinion.
That being said, if you are set on a 308 or 270 I would be go 308…again less recoil and more accurate then the 270 in my experience.

I'm certainly not engaged to the idea of just a 270 or a 308. I had even considered 7mm-08, but it appears that factory ammo is far more scarce for it…..same for the 260. I do reload 308, but for a hunting only rifle, I thought it would be a good idea to run factory ammo for the “just in case” times while traveling.

I'd do .308 for Wisconsin, and less recoil, cheaper rds, etc. (Sounds like you already reload for it also) if strictly hunting rifle I would go syn stock. Tikka wood stocks are pretty soft and will get banged up in wis. Just my .02c! Also, I'm currently searching for a .260REM myself and already have .308/30-06/300WSMx2/and some other stranger breeds. Super excited for the 260!

7mm-08 would be my choice – less recoil than .308, better ballistics and plenty of killing power.

Howdy,
For hunting, the .308 and .270 are very common at any ammo store.. Consider getting what your friends have so if you run out of ammo you can mooch some from them..!!
Actually, either one would be great….
Sorry I couldn't have been of more help…..Paul

I'll be stopping at a nice little shop tomorrow to shop around a bit. I'm sure I'll pull the trigger on something. They have a nice selection of all calibers mentioned except the 260. It's just virtually non-existent around here it seems. The bigger sporting goods stores have good selections for the rest. I'm kind of itching to try something I don't already have…..of course I've never deer hunted with a rifle before anyway because it's not legal here. I could just use my muzzleloader up there but that ruins the whole new gun excitement!

Checked out a few rifles over the weekend. Some of the competitors have stepped up their game it seems, but I'm pretty happy with my Tikka 223 Varmint so buying another Tikka brings some “known” to the decision. Now I'm just kicking around 7mm-08 vs 308…..and stainless or blued. LOL

Just to help you with your decision…the 7mm-08 does pretty much everything better than a 308 after 300yrds and more so the further you increase the range with similar type / bullet weights…
