223 super varmint
Posted by newbie 1313 on June 2, 2020 at 8:38 pmAt long last! Took me almost a year from first application to rifle in hand.(Corrona virus added a view months)
After some range time to sight in my scope and “break in” the barrel, I shot a view groups. Attached is a pic of my second group. Please keep in mind I am a complete novice so the jockey needs a lot of practice. ;DSo I was hoping to have my Waters Rifleman magazines ready, but looks like that will also take a long time before I can get my hands on one. So stuck with the factory magazine. Was doing my range time with factory ammo (frontier hornady 55gr), but want to start load development.
Will be for competition shooting only. 200-500 yards. Any advice? can get my hand on varget and Vihtavuori.
Going to use Lapua brass. undecided on primer.Ericbc7 replied 4 years, 6 months ago 5 Members · 10 Replies -

Good shooting for a beginner , in my .223 12/1 twist I use sako brass , Berger 52 gn target bullets (22408) 24 gn Vihtavuori 133 , cci Br primers ,when it had a tikka barrel if I was doing the right thing it would shoot .5 moa , do you have a rear bag ? If not get one ,If you have an 8/1 try Lapua brass 77 gn smk’s over 24.2 gn Vihtavuori 140 , cci Br primer , which I think is getting close to max load so start lower and work up , checking for pressure signs

Thanks for the reply! I did use a rear bag yes and my rifle is a 8/1 twist. Was looking at the 77gn smk's but was not sure if it would fit the factory mag if loaded 0.30 off the lands. Going to use redding fl bushing die. You might not know by any chance what the bushing size is if loaded with Lapua brass?

Okay thanks anyway. As soon as my load development is done I will post some results.

77's will fit your mag as is. 80's won't.
Thank you, looks like I got lucky. Bought my WR6 mag yesterday. Now hoping it will be here in the next week or two.

If you have the 1:12 twist your best accuracy will be with 55 gr and lighter.
You had some nice groups but you will not see the accuracy you want with heavier bullets.
My opinion, the best test is your experience.

If you are planning on reloading…this recipe will win you a lot of matches, and bring a grin to your face every time you go to the range. Tested and retested in “all” TIKKA 1/8 twist rifles variants.
Just make sure the Amax projectiles are all centric (read the entire thread). You may have to fine tune but this is a very accurate starting point.I modified 1 of mags to accept this load for both range and hunting situations but if you are only range or competition shooting just single load.

Here's another one with 80.5 Bergers…

Sorry for assuming you had the slow twist. Dog and Larkin have steered you right.
On the jump there is some recent research on the benefits of longer jump but in the end it’s about experimentation.
There have been a couple of articles on Bullet jump in the prs community, I forget the name but do a search on something like professional shooters .
The guy does polls on prs shooters for data on rifles, scopes and everything and he is seeing Beni it’s to longer jumps
