    I would say within 2 or 3 inches to the receiver at a minimum.

    I had a similar problem with a winchester once,  turned out to be the barrel and winchester replaced it.  But typically I would say this is a bedding issue,  I would check the contact points between the stock and the barrel.

    Do you do any shooting over 500 yds and do you ever wish the barrel were 26″???
