threading barrel
Posted by TIKKAFIN74 on July 11, 2018 at 12:22 pmhi everybody, im thinking about getting my tikka t3 243 barrel threaded.
im told to get the barrel threaded to 9/16-24!
I got a muzzle device that is 1/2-28, can I get my barrel
threaded to this size/ 1/2-28 or go with 9/16-24??

If the barrels big enough you can thread it what ever you like, you just have to make sure there’s enough of a shoulder after the thread to screw up to

FYI…I had my 300wsm lite barrel threaded and the gunsmith would not thread 1/2-28…he would only complete the job if I agreed to 9/16-24…it all to do with shoulder profile and the specific break i was going to use.
If you know what you are doing great, if not I would consult a smith in your area just to be sure before you start cutting.

I had my bull barrel threaded for a suppressor by a local gun shop for $150. Your local gun shops should know who turns the rethreads the barrels in your area. I was ok with the cost knowing it was done right.

9/16×24 is what I had my Tikka Hunter 30-06 threaded – it’s a slender barrel and any Smith that recommends it is looking out for you. I bought an adapter to my Dakota silencer 30 cal so I can remove the brake and use my suppressor.
Btw I had Jason at mountain tac do the work and I can’t tell where the brake starts and the barrel ends.. -

The material the brake is made out of makes a difference. Problem with 1/2″ threads is they cut away so much material. If take the brake off, that tip can be red hot after a few firings. So you need a good muzzle cap to dissipate heat adequately. The thread should be AS BIG AS POSSIBLE to keep as much barrel material there. I use Aluminum brakes to help reduce recoil (obviously) and to help remove heat from the barrel – being the thinnest end of the barrel – normally.
