T3x not shooting good
Posted by tom338 on June 12, 2016 at 12:05 ambuddy got a new T3x, does not shoot very good. It will shoot a real nice group, then when you shoot it the next time or next group its not good at all. He is taking his time between shots and the scope is a proven scope and yes the rings and bases are tight. What to do

My first instinct is to suspect the action bolts/screws – Do you have access to a torque wrench? I would start with 35 in-lbs and work up to 45 on the polymer stock (assuming that the T3X is similar to the T3 in this respect).
I also look at the bench set up, bipod, bags or rolled up jacket? In any case if he can eliminate the variables that contribute to an unstable condition we can start digging deeper.
What caliber and model T3X is he shooting? (in case the ammunition he is using is marginally stable for the barrel twist). These are just a couple thoughts, your friend's T3X should perform consistently so I would like to hear how things go.
Good luck!

I checked his action screws and re torqued a couple different times to see if any difference, none. Shooting at a range with a good solid rest front and back. He has tried noshers in 140 grain, barnes vortex in 150 grain and some cheaper ammo in the 150 grain. Also shot some 160 grain ammo. Three shot groups, sometimes really really good, let the gun cool off 15 minutes, the next 3 are crap.

Check pinch points for stock / barrel contact….any irregular torque on the forend would account for what you are experiencing…if you place the rifle differently or pressure the front of the stock in any way on the front bag differently this will happen and not uncommon. The rifle may also double group alot…
If you have no pinch points causing the problem then it could be other things…but if its capable of good groups and shooting good groups on occasion it usually related to shooter error or stock related problems.
If is a new rifle I'd clean before shooting each ammo type…especially if you are mixing in copper solids… -

I have shot this rifle myself and tried to help out with it. Cleaned it, shot it, cleaned it a lot and then shot it. Its just a nut job. No pinch points till that spot under the barrel where they have that one half moon where the barrel touches. I own 2 T3 lites and they both have them and shoot well that half moon spot still hitting the barrel.

Remove a bit of material so the barrel is fully floated, this has caused many a T3 to shoot bad , you seam to have been lucky with yours

If it's not meeting the 1moa guarantee then send it back.

+1 ! Free float it. That “bridge” shouldn´t make contact – nor should anything else in the stock/barrel channel.
Don´t let “The Experts” talk you into “it needs a Contact Point” BS. It does not – nor does it want it.
