New Guy needs help. want to get a t3
Posted by ncbowhnter on December 11, 2012 at 3:13 amI've decided to go with a t3 over a remington.
I want a t3, thinking of the varmint. Must be .308 and must have the heavy barrel and must be threaded. I am gonna put a supressor on it later. I also love the looks of the grs stock. So how do I go about making this happen? Can u custom order one or is there another way to go about it?
thanks for the help. Bradyukonal replied 10 years, 1 month ago 7 Members · 16 Replies -

Need to know where you are from, first (the threaded for supressor thing).

Assuming you are in the US your requested T3 sounds good but there are a few problems. If I remember correctly Beretta owns both Sako and Tikka and they only import certain models in certain calibers. From what I have been told (and able to find) they only import the varmint in .223 and .22-250. You might be able to find a varmint in .308 but odds are it will be used and difficult to find. It also will not have a threaded barrel. The only model that fits your requirements of .308 with a threaded heavy barrel that Beretta still imports is the Tikka Tactical model. Beretta used to import both a 20″ and 24″ barreled tactical but they only import the 20″ barrel now. If you go to Tikka's website (http://www.tikka.fi/) you will see all kinds of great guns but many are not imported. If you could find a varmint it should be cheaper to send it out and have it threaded by a gunsmith than to buy a tactical model. The stocks on Tikka Performance are 100% inletted so all you should have to do is remove the old stock and screw on the new stock to the right torque settings. I hope this helps.

I am in the US. NC. I have looked at the tactical model but it seems to be way overpriced, especially since I plan on changing out the stock. Maybe I should just stick with the remington 700 then

Hi NCbowhnter,
The varmints are no longer being imported so snatch up any you come across.
Tikka's muzzle thread is metric which won't help you much when buying a can.
If you can find a heavy barrel .308 (Beretta still imports the Scout) have a gunsmith thread the end of the barrel in SAE. It's a trivial task for a competent smith. There is even a shop here in MT that has a special lathe that lets him thread the muzzle without removing the barrel from the action.
The shop here is Gentry Custom. He makes the Quiet Brakes that have rave reviews.
Hopefully this helps!

If you feel like doing the leg work and paper work, your T3 HB is available in Canada in .204, 22-250, .308, 7mm rem mag, 300 mag, 300 wsm and .223.
I'm not sure why they are available in Canada and not the US… Doesn't make any sense.http://www.cabelas.ca/index.cfm?pageID=71&§ion=1187§ion2=1724§ion3=1952&ID=9304
And for the record, no, I will not sell my T3 HB Stainless 300 WSM!

Nope, if someone want it, they are gonna have to pry it from my cold dead rotting hands. This Tikka is one that will be mine to the death. Now my Savage… that's a different story. 😛

No, it doesn't make any sense. I would buy one now in .308 if they were sold in the US! As it is I will probably end up buying a Lite stainless and rebarreling it.
-
I went with the Lite Stainless for the same reason – can't get the Varmint in .308 here.
-
I purchase several blued T3s from a local store for $500-$539 on sale just to have the actions for rebarreling.
By the time you pay for the varmint model plus a good stock, you could build a semi custom for almost the same price.
-
I agree on the pricing being an issue, It is a bit steep. Though here in Canada, getting a barrel is quite an ordeal. It's easier to just buy one than to buy a rifle for an action and then trick it out. If I could have purchased it in blued, I would have… but the varmint or heavy barrel is only available in stainless. Still, I don't have buyers remorse.

I wish I could get my hands on the Stainless Varmint… We are getting our FFL and I'll see if Beretta will let us import some of these hard to get Tikkas

That would be great! Personally I am not optimistic with the way Beretta has seemingly been cutting the models that they import. Maybe you/we will all get lucky though.
