Need Some Input
Posted by Jason_McHann on July 7, 2015 at 7:32 pmHere in the US, we've seen how difficult it is to purchase certain Tikka models i.e. Varmints in any caliber, 6.5x55se, etc.
Currently, I have about 30 reamers from 17 Fireball to 375 Ruger that I've used to build custom Tikkas for guys who wanted the Tikka action, but couldn't get the one they wanted.
What if I could build customs of the models most sought after and sell them on our site? They would be a little more than the factory Tikkas, but not much because of the premium placed on their “premium” models.
Then you could choose the stock, finish, and virtually any other customization you want for the rifle system.
What do you guys think?

Wish this post was about 5 months earlier. I am looking to upgrade my 25-06 barrel to a 6.5×55. I have my stock, bottom metal, mags and new bolt parts. Just need the barrel and someone to put it all together. Interested in helping out?

We've been doing a ton of customs here at the shop the last couple years. Gunsmithing services are tough to advertise online so I'm definitely interested in this type of input.
Which bottom metal are you using?
I have 6.5 barrels and can contour them to any dimension you like. Most customers go with either the Tikka Varmint contour or the Sporter (Lite) contour. But I can go anywhere in between.
We can go stainless or chromoly. If you choose chromoly, we'll just need to cerakote it or something similar.
Do you want a brake?
All of the above is in my wheelhouse so I'm definitely interested in putting it together for you.

I would depend on the price but this is a distinct possibility.
Can you get Tikka actions or would you have to cannibalize an available rifle?

I would have to cannibalize rifles. Beretta was pretty clear they aren't interested in sending me plain actions.
The good news is, that would provide an affordable source of OEM parts instead of the overpriced ones at Brownell's.
It's not Brownell's fault, Beretta charges them an arm and a leg for components.

Sounds like I better make another couple dozen lugs. Then you can face off receivers and REALLY put together some sweet customs! ;D

So the question is, how much would you pay for a semi-custom hunting rifle?
If it's a factory chambering, with one of our American Hunter stocks, upgraded lug, optic mounts, Limbsaver Recoil pad, tuned trigger and a professional bed job?
If it's a custom match grade barrel in a custom chambering with all of the above?
If it's a Varmint Model clone in any chamber you want, custom stock, match grade barrel, full bed job, muzzle brake, upgraded lug, optic mounts, Limbsaver, tuned trigger (or custom trigger)?
What do you guys think?
How much is a semi-custom and full-custom rifle worth to you?
We might even include YukonAl's lug! 😉

I think there is a market, there are not a lot of people who want to take the time tO work on tikkas. I sent you an email with a parts list and what I am kind of looking for. The bottom metal is atlasworxs that uses AICS mags.

I think you're somewhere in the $1,000 to $1,500 range depending on Sporter vs Varmint.
I really think if you offer all that, people should take advantage of it. One stop shopping, from someone who knows Tikka's. To offer all that is special. Lot's of gunsmiths will “try” to work on Tikka's, but there is a learning curve. Especially bedding…
I've perfected it, and, if I remember…shared it with you. If not, the next time we talk, I'll let you in on it.
Great idea…offering those services, Jason. Best of luck.

That's the exact price range I'm trying to stay within Al. Of course, your lugs might double the price! 😉

I wish you would have thought of this earlier. I'm 2 1/2 months into a 6 month waiting period for my 17 Remington Fireball. By the time I'm done with optics and all I will have about $3,500.00 in rifle

Don't feel bad PA. This is still the idea phase. Building guns locally has been a piece of cake, opening it up to the country is challenging.
I would definitely need to buy more tools to handle the increased volume.
All good problems to have! Anyone have $80k lying around so I can buy a new cnc lathe?

Ok when I burn out my barrel I want a YukonAl lug with a 30 in good barrel. $800 to 1 k is about what I will pay. (Cheaper is better)I might go $1200 but at some point I can't make good on my credit card.

A couple years ago I took an old Remington 700 I had and had a gunsmith true up the action and thread/chamber a barrel along with threading the muzzle. Then he finished the barreled action in Cerakote. This ran me about $800. Then I bought a HS Precision stock and bottom metal off a guy for $300 and mounted it in that. It's been a good shooter.
