Bell & Carlson Medalist stock
Posted by sluggo on February 1, 2012 at 4:41 pmYesterday I received a new Bell & Carlson Medalist stock for the T3 and this thing is really nice. It comes with a full length aluminum bedding block with an integral recoil lug so the factory recoil lug is no longer necessary. The stock weighs 34.5 oz so it is about 5.5 oz heavier than the factory tuperware stock but much more rigid and stable and looks very sharp and has a nice Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad fitted to it. It is a straight drop in design with no modifications required and the action screws lined up perfectly and tightened up with no binding. It is fully floated back to the action (I ran paper from between the barrel and stock for the entire length of the forend). The stock is a little beefier in the grip with a nice palm swell and the forend feels a little thicker as well. Inletting is good with nice metal to stock fit. The stock has no checkering but the spider web painting process provides a significantly textured grip.
I've yet to get to the range so final judgement will have to wait but at this point I'd say this is a very nice product and something you should definitely consider if you are looking to upgrade. Best of all Jason McHann, here on Tikka Shooters can set you up so give him a shout.

What size groups were you getting with your stock factory set up?

This gun is better (by a little) than 1 MOA for 3 shots with ammo it likes on a consistent basis. Sometimes groups were considerably better than 1 MOA but rarely over. Fine shooting rifle. Any bad groups were operator error I'm sure. I'm hoping to get out this weekend but the forecast is calling for more than a foot of snow tonight and tomorrow so that might put the kabosh on outdoor activities.

Is the forend stiff enough to remain free floating on the barrel if a bipod is used?
Is the forend wide enough to be opened up for a varmint weight barrel?
Thanks!

You will be fine running a bipod, I have no flex in mine. There is plenty of room to open up for a larger barrel. I have opened mine up since the pic, but even as it was in the pic the stock wouldn't make contact with the barrel when loaded up on the bipod.

OK, initial results are in. I went to the range this morning (15 degrees and almost 2 feet of snow in the last couple days). My first 3 shot group, with a load that I developed for this rifle using the factory stock, measured .467″. I'd say that's a winner! I could see small differences in my sight pictured when the shot went off so I think it is safe to say that if my holds had been perfect this probably would have been a quarter inch group. To make things even better there was at least a couple hundred elk hanging out on the hillside adjacent to the range and they couldn't have cared less about the shooting going on. That was fantastic!
The next group I shot was not a load that I developed or even previously fired in this rifle. It was something I had loaded for a long since gone Husqvarna 270 in the 90's. This load put 3 rounds in a 1.0″ triangle. I imagine with a little load development I could easily turn this into a sub 3/4″ group load.
So, as you can probably gather I'm very pleased with my initial results and look forward to many years of excellent service from my Tikka/Bell & Carlson combo. Looks pretty sweet too.

I'll take some pics tonight but I'll probably need help getting the pics posted. FYI, I contacted Bell & Carlson and they said the action screws should be tightened to 50 inch pounds in case anyone was wondering.

I don't see them listed in the Tikka Store. How 'bout it Jason…what's the story? How do I order one thru you?

I have a pic of the gun with the B&C stock and a pic of the target I shot this weekend. It's dark out when I get home so I had to take the pics indoors which doesn't help the color detail but I can e-mail these pics to someone to post up.

I have that same stock! Great shooting after putting it on. I want to bed mine for the best accuracy.
One problem I had, was the toe of the recoil pad broke. Don't know if it was shooting on bench (recoil contact?), carrying while hunting, or on my motorcycle to get into the hunting area.
Anyone know what mosel number the recoil pads are?
