75 Gr A-Max loading info needed.
Posted by bravastar1 on January 3, 2015 at 3:08 pmDoes anyone have a load for the 75 Gr Amax bullet that shoots well out of a Tikka with a 1 in 8 twist? I loaded some with IMR4320 and it looked like I was shotgunning rather than rifle shooting. I need a better place to start.

Sorry. It is for a 223. Larkin, I did check a load book and it shot for shiz. That is why I am asking for help.

I picked up a bunch of the 75 A-max .224 and plan to do some .223 load testing when the weather warms.
I plan to start with Reloader 15, Varget and H4895- I have had some promising results with 80 gr SMK's and the H4895.

I just stumbled into a deal on an 8″ twist super light. I'll post results as I can

Hi start at the lower amount and work up in .2's gr all the way to the max , do the full range as there's sometimes a lower and high amount that suits some barrels , also what suits one barrel might not suit yours , I've had good results with Vit 133 but that was for a Berger 52gr match head

I already have a 55 gr Vmax load that shoots close to 1/2 inch. I load 20.8 gr of LT-32. I just got some Varget yesterday and will try that with the 75gr Amax bullets. I will post what happens.

Now that you have Varget, try 25.5grs with a COAL – 2.26 – 2.27″ with the 55gr Vmax, still fits factory mag.
You might have to play around a little with it but it has shot well in all Tikka's at the range.
Deadly accurate, pretty much same ragged hole or sub 1/2″ groups all day @ 100yrds out of both my 223 lite and Varment T3's…Its a great hunting load that will shoot well all year round.FYI – The Nosler 55gr – 60gr Spitzers were more accurate then the Hornady if you are looking to try a new bullet.
My exact load:
Hornady Brass
25.5gr Varget
60gr Nosler Spitzer Ballistic Tip
COAL = 2.27″….pretty much mag length…
FPS = 3100 -

Hi it might be worth looking at a older reloading book has sometime they give a high maximum load has they wasn't any safety police about back then ( not that I'd do anything like that)

Regarding the 1000 yd jug video, His recipe is .5 gr over the Hodgdon guide, but in the comments for the video, someone describes his load as being half neck sized, “0.248 bushing sizing half of the neck” which would mean he is operating with a touch more case volume than the reloading guides assume. Probably a warm round but the extra volume might lower pressures a bit.
An amazing shot by any standard!

I'm gonna try to shoot this recipe this weekend on my friends property.
I'll see how it groups at 200 & 500yrds and report back.
Only difference is brass…I'm using Hornady
If it shoots sub MOA then I'll load more and try it at 800yrds the next time I'm out there.I've loaded:
10 rounds @ 25grs
10 rounds @ 25.2grs
10 rounds @ 25.5grsI'll work up and see what happens…

Varget and 75 gr A-Max bullets shot like crap out of my Tikka .223 TAC. Best of 10 powder loads was just inder 1 inch. Worst was about 2.5 inches. My buddy gave me some 70 Gr Bergers to try. All I can say is WOW. One load shot a 5 round group of .495 using Varget.. For me that is great. I guess I will be throwing away the remaining A-Max bullets.
