Lee factory crimp dies
Posted by snarglepuss on September 17, 2015 at 1:04 pmDoes anyone have any experience using these for precision reloading? From their website I've read that
they can have the same effect on accuracy as loading up to the lands. I want to load 75 to 77 grain bullets in .223 without having to modify my magazines to accommodate a longer bullet length.I do not hunt nor will I be rough handling my ammunition. I am hoping to compete in precision rifle matches
to 600 meters. Starting this game late in life so I would be obliged for any advice I can get from you
experienced fellas.Cheers.

Have not used them but you can have good success loading Hornady 75gr HP and Lapua 77gr to max mag length….

I have not used the Lee factory crimp die, but saw some preliminary research regarding varying the crimping pressure with the “Consistant Crimp” torque handle and Lee crimp dies. .223 loads were tested, varying the crimp force only. The results were interesting and suggested that there is a “sweet spot” for crimp force similar to bullet seating depth. Look up the Consistant Crimp product and the research should come up.
Let us know if you find anything interesting!

I have and use the Lee factory Crimp die. I haven't really tested different variances in my crimps, but from what I have read both on crimps and on the dies, these give a more consistent crimp than some other dies. Realistically, you don't necessarily need a lot of crimp if you have a bolt, so I stick with a lighter crimp. But depending on the type of bullet you use, you may need to crimp. not much experience here, so someone else can chime in on that.

Hi I don't crimp at all , just the neck tension keeps the head in place , only shoot at a range and don't go hunting and never had a problem

I have never crimped any ammo I have made for bolt action rifles.
For both hunting and target shooting purposes…and have never had an issue. -

I agree with dog, I have never seen an advantage with crimping in a bolt gun… I think the bullet jump to lands makes more impact on accuracy

Yes i crimp only hunting loads in hard kicking cals , do not crimp target because i find the neck tension give good results
