New guy from Washington
Posted by aer212 on February 3, 2015 at 3:54 amHi guys, just joined from Washington. Not new to Tikka's, I have a few and had some others. I recently had a gun built off a Tikka t3 action. Its a .17-.204 with a Lilja 22 inch 9 twist barrel #3 contour, B&C stock, Atlasworx bottom metal, bolt shroud and bolt knob. My coyote load is 28.3gr RL17 shooting 30gr bullets at 4070fps. Working pretty good on coyotes so far which is why I had it built.

That is really a cool build, and a dog killer.
If you don't like the shiny barrel, I have dulled them up a bit with Scotch Brite pads, or the equivalent. Rub the length of the barrel, not around it (or it'll just polish it more).
With a hammer like that, you could've saved your money on the bottom metal, and kept factory. You won't be needing more than one shot! ;D
Thanks for posting.

Thanks, I was planning on getting the gun cerakoted but coyote season started before I got it up and running. I still plan to do it but it will be after season.

That's a nice looking stick. Who did your barrel work and roughly how much did it cost if you don't mind sharing?

Wow nice wildcat and over 4k fps with 22 in barrel! I've only seen that with some old “accellorator” saboted bullets I got at a gun show in my 30-06. I still have 100 of those old .224 in polymer 30 cal sabo bullets. Anyway great job and I am keen to know if you had any issues rebarreling your tikka. Tell us the story friend and welcome!

High Speed Shooting Systems did the build but for anyone thinking about having him do a small caliber, it probably isn't worth calling and asking him. He did not like doing the .17. I don't really want to say the price as I don't know if he gave me a deal or not. I will say I paid for the build twice because the first go around I had a Douglas barrel that gave me fits and had a Lilja put on before it started working right. I slugged the Douglas and found out it was too tight, measured .1705, was supposed to measure .172 from groove to groove.

My goal on the velocity was 4050 and I achieved that easily with the RL17 with no pressure signs, other powders I tried were Ramshot hunter which shot even better than the RL17 but velocity was 3800. Also tried Varget and I did get the speed I wanted but at a max load and not very good accuracy. Also tried H414 which shot decent but too slow. As far as any issues, I don't know as I didn't do the work myself.
