Project Gun Continues 2
Took the standard Tikka T3 Varmint in 22-250 to the range today for it break in session. As I described in the earlier post the factory supplied rings are not made for a 50mm objective with 56mm outside diameter. I mounted my scope anyway by shimming up the scope on the front rings. I just wanted to get it on paper while at the range. I am expecting my EGW rings soon and will do the permanent scope installation when they arrive. Pictured is my Zeiss Conquest 6.5 x20 50mm.. If you look under the front of the scope you may the piece of business card I used to make sure the scope did not touch the barrel when shooting.
Sighting in: I did the old look through the bore and then check to see if the scope was in the same general area. In my case I adjusted the scope all the way and was still approximately 18″ high. Horizontal was ok for my break in procedure. I used two targets placed on top of each other and after my first shot I used the same sight in point for all other shots. I was on the 50 yard range
Break in: I decided to shoot 10 rounds today. Starting with a clean barrel I would shoot, clean the bore and let the barrel cool. I did this procedure for 5 shots. I use Pro-Shot Copper solvent with great success. I do not brush my barrel. After the 5 shots I was getting a little bored so I shot three in a row. I cleaned and waited quite a while for the barrel to cool. I shot two more rounds to finish my 10. The barrel was cleaning easily and I expect it to be broken in within 30 rounds.
Results: Shot number one shot lower that the remaining nine only due to a different sight in point. The remaining 9 all placed within .835. In the picture of the targets you will see that a nickle covers the 9 break in shots. All in all I was quite happy with the performance of the rifle.
Other information: I adjusted the trigger pull from 3.5 pounds to 2 pounds 4 ounces. I will let the trigger work at this level before adjusting further. Ammunition used was Hornady Superformance with advertised speed of 4000fps. These rounds were pleasant to shoot. and performed as expected. I have been using Superformance in my .223 AR's with great success…..sub MOA at 200 yards. I am hoping to get the same performance with the Tikka. Temperature was 90 degrees and I am in Houston. Who knows what the humidity was??
My pictures seem to be to large to post. Stay tuned for further developments.
