tikka 270 wsm – two impact points
Posted by Deleted User on July 11, 2012 at 4:25 pmI recently picked up a t3 lite stainless in 270 wsm. Working up loads (using 3 round groups) I noticed that the 1st and 3rd shots will generally cut the same hole, while the the second will usually be somewhere to the right from 1 to 2 inches. The stock to action fit seems very good but I know this condition is often contributed to a bedding issue. What else could it be? I thought maybe it could be the scope but don't figure the pattern would be so repeatable.

That's a tough one. It could be a number of things including how the action is fitting in the stock.
I found that my 270 wsm shoots best when torqued to 45 in/lbs in the rear and 40 in the front. Sako actually states that the torque settings should be closer to 55 in/lbs.
Another common issue is trigger pull. That would be more sporadic than what it sounds like you are experiencing.
One issue I had in another of my guns was that one of my ring screws came a little loose which shifted point of impact ever other shot.

I had a similar problem with a winchester once, turned out to be the barrel and winchester replaced it. But typically I would say this is a bedding issue, I would check the contact points between the stock and the barrel.

Should the Barrel on a T3 be floating along the full length, up to the receiver?

I would say within 2 or 3 inches to the receiver at a minimum.

There is a small point of contact to the stock about 3 inches in front of the receiver on some guns. My 270 had one and I simply cut it out.
