T3 varmint 30-06 best factory Load?
Posted by andy c on February 15, 2012 at 10:12 pmHi All,
just joined the forum (great idea btw) and just getting my first Tikka (T3 super varmint in 30-06) in a few weeks.
I'm pairing it with a Vortex razorHD 5-20×50, Roedale moderator, seriously tempted by the PSE stock and I can't wait to try it out!
Ive been a Ruger man up to now (M77's in .243 and .22LR) I don't home load (I know I should start!) and the .243 has been happy with federal ammo consistently. Now I know this is a million dollar question, but what is the overall feeling from you guys as to what the best factory ammo for the varmint would be? Federal, Winchester, anyone use Sako?thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum Andy! I don't have a good answer to your question, but I was wondering what you were going to use a Super Varmint in 30-06 for? I just recently bought a Varmint in 22-250. Still in the process of breaking in the barrel. – Todd

Hi Todd
Plan to use the rifle for some stalking and a bit of target shooting, I mainly use my .243 for stalking, its got a 19″ lightweight barrel, and a pes over barrel moderator and gets hopelessly hot after 3 shots so no good on the range, though great on the Roe and foxes. so thought I'd go for a heavier profile in 30-06. I will look at changing out the stock I think, but we'll see. How are you finding yours? Do you find the stock comfortable/stable etc?
cheers

I'm still working on breaking the barrel in. One session was fire one shot and clean for the first ten shots. On the second session I fired three shots and cleaned the barrel, and did this three times. The next time out it will be fire five shots and clean for two or three times. I'll pay more attention to the stock during my next session. It might not be until the following weekend since I plan to go to a pistol match this coming weekend.

Thanks Todd, when I get the gun I guess I should do the same, may as well start off doing it right!
must start hand loading too, 30-06 isn't a hugely common calibre over here in the UK, .308 much more popular it seems, so if I start to hand load I should be able to open up the full potential of the Tikka – though from what Ive read and heard, the T3 is pretty accurate “out of the box”.
Have fun and good luck with the pistol match, thats sadly a pleasure we are denied this side of the pond (unless its black powder)
cheers
Andy
