Essentially it is required that an individual can demonstrate “good reason” for each and any firearm . There are all sorts of local variations on that, as unfortunately the law allows for local CPO to impose additional conditions on any whim of personal belief or interest. Of course this is always wrapped up in a shroud labelled Public Safety, but in fact adds very little in terms of public safety and it does have the effect of alienating the law abiding firearms owner. Firearms training is currently voluntary, but that may change in the years to come in order to obtain a Firearms licence.

There are rules about storage and prevention of unauthorised access, but that is pretty much good sense IMHO.

Expanding ammunition is complete legislative mess, but again it is available to those persons with good reason to use it. Ie game hunters.

Any way, it possible to own firearms, and I believe that we have considerably greater opportunities to hunt than in the USA, if that is your thing. For instance we have 6 species of deer and it is possible to hunt one or another of them every day of the year except Christmas Day.

So, all is not quite lost.
