I hunted with my Tikka hunter model 30-06 the first season I had it and it rained constantly. The checkering did suffer from the wet.
If I had it to do again I would seal it with polyurethane or linseed oil before exposure.
The damage was like if I had sanded the checkering a bit. Meaning the raised bumps rounded off in my gloved hand.
