I have no experience with copper rounds although I plan to start using them this fall with mule deer. Everything I've read suggests they are better than lead if you're within about 300 yards. Too far and they'll be too slow to open up properly. You can use a lighter weight bullet (150 grain ought to be GTG for elk) for a slightly flatter trajectory and you get the lead out of your diet to boot. YMMV.
